Reiki is an often understated holistic treatment providing instant relief to anyone who suffers from anxiety, stress, a chronic illness or who wants to feel more balanced and grounded.
Reiki is a form of alternative medicine called energy healing whereby reiki practitioners use palm or hands-on healing to channel energy through the palms of the practitioner to the recipient.
It works on different levels relating to physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. It really is all about feeling in harmony with your body whilst opening up to the power of reiki healing.
Some of the best healing health benefits are stress reduction and relaxation, which trigger the body's natural healing abilities; if for example your immune system is low and you are always catching one cold after another, it seeks to maintain health.
Energy healing has been used for centuries in various forms and advocates of reiki believe it works with the energy fields around the body which explains why recipients can often envisage auras and colours when undergoing a session. Energy healing targets the energy fields around the body helping to heal or rebalance the weaknesses and blockages in the body.
According to holistic practitioners, energy can build up in the body where there has been physical injury or possibly emotional pain, creating energy blocks over time, eventually leading to illness. But by simply improving the flow of energy around the body, this enables relaxation, reduces pain, speeds healing, and reduces other symptoms of illness.
Reiki can be used to treat any of the following conditions:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Imsomnia
- Chronic pain
- Infertility
- Neurodegenerative disorders
- Crohn’s disease
- Fatigue syndrome
- Ability to cope with cancer treatments
The word "reiki" comes from the Japanese words "rei" (universal) and "ki" (life energy). Reiki has been around for thousands of years and is best practiced in a peaceful setting. The recipient will lie on a comfy, heated massage bed, fully clothed with blankets over. Soothing music will accompany the treatment and essential oils may be used. A mini meditation may start the session off which requires no involvement other than to listen and take a few deep breaths.
The holistic practitioner then places their hands lightly on or over specific areas of the head, limbs, and torso using different hand shapes, for between 2 and 5 minutes in each area. The hands can be placed over 20 different areas of the body but usually over the various chakras ( energy centres) If there is a particular injury, or long running ailments such as migraines, the hands may be held on or just above that area.
Whilst the practitioner holds their hands lightly on or over the body, the transfer of energy starts to takes place. During this time, the practitioner's hands may be warm and tingling and the recipient may feel this heat. Often cold is felt, tingling, maybe a twitch or too or also maybe nothing is felt other than immense calm and peace.
Some reiki practitioners will use crystals for chakra healing because these can enhance healing. For more information about crystal healing please read our separate blog about the chakras.
Sessions usually last around 45 to 60 minutes to include a bit of a debrief at the end, but it very much depends on the healing procedure and what a client wishes to accomplish. Some clients prefer to have one session while others have a series of sessions to work on a particular issue and benefit from monthly treatments.
Most people who receive reiki say that it is intensely relaxing, soothing, calming and leaves then with a beautiful sense of peace.
Personal experience of reiki treatment
One of my customers recounts her experience:
“As a recipient and (now) devout believer of reiki, I was immediately blown away by the sensation of heat passing through the hands of the therapist and onto my body, which demonstrated the healing properties that reiki can ignite.
“On two occasions, reiki was performed on my head, because I suffer from migraines and it relieves the pain. It wasn't long into the treatment, 15 minutes or so, when I began to sense a violet/purple aura which signifies an intuitive, sensitive, deep feeling person. The violet aura relates to the crown of the head, pineal gland and nervous system. As an intuitive colour in the aura, this also reveals psychic power of attunement with self, and as a spiritual person, this would be accurate.
“After just one session of reiki, and by placing one palm of the hand on the back of my head and one on the forehead, and then pressing slightly, heat radiated to the source of the pain and my migraine showed a definite improvement. Further sessions, prior to the onset of another migraine for example, would help to manage my condition.”
